Adbusters Website Analysis

Adbusters Website Analysis How does the website reinforce the brand identity of the magazine? I would say that the website reinforces brand identity because it fits with the theme of subverting from the general conventions. This is because they continue with an alternative theme with unconventional text and text positioning. The sans serif font helps to reinforce the idea that the brand is different and unconventional. Additionally, the website includes controversial imagery and statements that reinforce the brand identity because it demonstrates that the brand is about controversy and about criticising widely held beliefs. It lets the audience know what to expect with the magazine. Furthermore, the ideologies that Adbusters hold are very anti-capitalist and, therefore, they do not like to use adverts in their magazines. This idea is carried onto their website which, therefore, supports their brand identity because the website doesn't include any advertisements. Is there a cle
Occupy Wall Street movement: OWS was a left wing movement beginning on September 17 2011. Protesting against inequality, greed and power of Americans. They also criticised the wealthiest 1%. It was a passive movement where they would occupy prominent buildings. Buy Nothing Day: Opposed to buying things around Christmas and Black Friday to demonstrate anti-consumerist ideas. Especially because of the fact that it is held near Black Friday, the most consumerist day.

Ideological practices of Adbusters and how it interacts with its audience.

What is the ideology/ethos of Adbusters? Adbusters is an anti-capitalist/anti-commercial magazine that subverts from the generic codes and rules for magazines. They are also anti-advertisement, hence the name "Adbusters", because they feel that advertisements have warped the magazine industry and made it more commercial and all about money. They also feel that advertising is bad because it limits the designers. This is because to do well in advertising, designers have to do what the corporate people want and not let their own creativity flow. They have political ideologies where they want to be activists against mainstream ideas. How does Adbusters subvert traditional magazine conventions, especially in relation to advertising? Adbusters subverts from traditional magazine conventions with advertising because of the fact that they have decided not to run real adverts in their magazine because they want to challenge corporate advertising and consumer culture. Additionally,

Dominant hegemonic notions of gender in Adbusters

Image
P.E.A I would say that this image on the front cover of Adbusters conforms to the dominant hegemonic notions of gender because of the fact that it portrays a man in an aggressive pose and shouting. The reason why I would say that this conforms to dominant hegemonic notions of gender is because the stereotype of males is that they are the more powerful and aggressive sex. The aggression is portrayed though him shouting making him seem more dominant. I would say that this advertisement from the Adbusters magazine subverts from the dominant hegemonic notions of gender because the gender of the person is not explicitly shown in the image so you can not actually tell whether they are male or female. This is because there is a mid shot of the person's feet meaning that there is no identifying features that would tell us what gender they are. This is effective because it could be showing us that it doesn't matter what gender you are because when you are living in povert

Key Terms/Language for Representation

Stereotypical : A commonly held belief about a group of people or place. (e.g women should enjoy activities such as cooking). Conforms : When something comply's with rules. (e.g not breaking the law/conforming to the law). Subverts : When something goes against rules. (Adbusters subverts from the magazine genre conventions.). Objectification : The act of taking away somebodies humanity and referring to them as objects. (The woman on the front cover of Woman magazine because the woman represents that ideology of the company rather than anything about her own feelings). Sexualisation : The act of thinking about somebody in a way that is just about sex. To attach sexual connotations to something. (Woman magazine, soap advert depicts a woman in the shower/bath setting). Hegemony : Dominance over a group or person. Patriarchal Hegemony : Male dominance in society. (Hitchcock interview, he talks like the only way the women get a successful career is because of him appointing them).

What value are Nike products given in this video? Represent more than just a shoe The type of shoes gives them a higher social status. "Commodity fetishism is the process of ascribing magic "phantom-like" qualities to an object, whereby the human labour required to make that object is lost once the object is associated with a monetary value for exchange." Patricia Louie. Audience Response: I would say that the audience response to these adverts would be that they would feel guilty and ashamed that they are wasting water because the tap flowing into the sink could represent the water being washed down the drain and, therefore, not being used for anything useful. The adverts make people feel bad about having enough water to waste when there are people who do everything they can just for a little bit of water. The adverts would make the audience realise that their lifestyle includes a lot of wastage and expenditure on unnecessary things because it compare

Re-presentation

Image
The four steps of representation 1. The group, place or issue on which a media text is focusing. 2. The technical devices the media text uses in order to present these groups or issues. 3. The message about the group or issue being created within the text. 4. The impact of this message on the target audience. P.E.A The issue that the media text is focusing on is that many people in third world countries such as countries in Africa do not have access to things that we, in a first wold country, take for granted. For example, the fact that it includes the brand name "Christian Louboutin" is ironic because that is the name of a high quality brand that people probably really want even though they have regular shoes anyway but the picture is of someone who has recycled materials to create something to help them. You can see what appears to be somebody from a black ethnicity who is standing in a desert area which leads us to believe that it is representing coloured people
Adbusters : (www.adbusters.org.) Published six times a year by Adbusters Media Foundation, 1989 to present. Set edition: May/June 1016 Price: £10.99 120,000 readership (website April 2017) Genre: Independant, campaigning, culture jamming Subtitle: Journal of the mental environment How does the combination of elements of media language: Communicate messages and values? The main image is of a soldier and we know this because of the fact that the mise-en-scene of the photograph is of a man wearing camouflage and with an expression that establishes pain or anger. This communicates messages and values because of the fact Reflect the social/cultural context? The soldier appears as if he is going into some kind of battle and shouting as if he is in protest which reflects the ideas of the magazine wanting to protest against mainstream ideologies. Establish the brand identity of the magazine? I think that the main image of the magazine establishes brand identity because Rein

"Genre conventions in magazines are completely informed by the social and historical context to which they are made"

" Genre conventions in magazines are completely informed by the social and historical context to which they are made" - Jack Avery Evaluate this statement with reference to Adbusters. Make reference to genre hybridity. Adbusters are an anti-capitalist organisation know for their production of thought provoking and atypical content. They rely on the intelligence of the reader to understand the ideologies that they are trying to convey through the use of the magazine. The Adbusters magazine utilises genre hybridity by using the genres of culture jamming and campaigning to attract many people to their product and, therefore, expose as many people as possible to their ideologies which consist of anti-capitalism and freedom of people. On the one hand I would say that magazines are informed by the social and historical context in which they are made because of the fact that magazines need to rely on certain conventions to attract an audience. However, the Adbusters magazine s
