The double page spread creates meaning with the ideology of the magazine. For example, the ideology is apparent in the pull quote of the article because it is literally stating the ideology "Nowadays, it takes more than just talent to cross over and have people pay attention." The ideology is that it is harder to become a popular artist now because people care less about the music and more about cosmetic things such as wealth and clothing. The costume helps to convey the meaning of the article because although it is simplistic it is fashionable proving that you need to have more than musical talent to get noticed. This is proved as he is being interviewed for a magazine (getting noticed). Although there is not a direct mode of address used in the main image because the subject is not looking directly at the camera it is still effective at emphasising the fact that it is talking to the reader because of the fact that the image shows the subjects articulating with his hands...

Both magazines, Woman and Adbusters, have their own personal viewpoints and ideologies that have been carefully encoded into each part of the magazine by the producer. Woman, focusing heavily on the stereotypical ideas about women (because of the socio-historical context of when the magazine was produced (the 1960s)) and Adbusters portraying very modern ideas about gender and other subjects such as saving the planet. Adbusters always includes their slightly subversive, anti-capitalist, ideas in every article. Adbusters Website Analysis How does the website reinforce the brand identity of the magazine? I would say that the website reinforces brand identity because it fits with the theme of subverting from the general conventions. This is because they continue with an alternative theme with unconventional text and text positioning. The sans serif font helps to reinforce the idea that the brand is different and unconventional. Additionally, the website includes controversial imagery and statements that reinforce the brand identity because it demonstrates that the brand is about controversy and about criticising widely held beliefs. It lets the audience know what to expect with the magazine. Occupy Wall Street movement: OWS was a left wing movement beginning on September 17 2011. Protesting against inequality,greed and power of Americans. They also criticised the wealthiest 1%. It was a passive movement where they would occupy prominent buildings. Buy Nothing Day: Opposed to buying things around Christmas and Black Friday to demonstrate anti-consumerist ideas. What is the ideology/ethos of Adbusters? Adbusters is an anti-capitalist/anti-commercial magazine that subverts from the generic codes and rules for magazines. They are also anti-advertisement, hence the name "Adbusters", because they feel that advertisements have warped the magazine industry and made it more commercial and all about money. They also feel that advertising is bad because it limits the designers. This is because to do well in advertising, designers have to do what the corporate people want and not let their own creativity flow. P.E.A I would say that this image on the front cover of Adbusters conforms to the dominant hegemonic notions of gender because of the fact that it portrays a man in an aggressive pose and shouting. The reason why I would say that this conforms to dominant hegemonic notions of gender is because the stereotype of males is that they are the more powerful and aggressive sex. The aggression is portrayed though him shouting making him seem more dominant. I would say that this advertisement from the Adbusters magazine subverts from the dominant hegemonic notions of gender because the gender of the person is not explicitly shown in the image so you can not actually tell whether they are male or female. This is because there is a mid shot of the person's feet meaning that there is no identifying features that would tell us what gender they are. Woman has competed with Woman's Own (Newnes) and Woman's Weekly (Amalgamated) to be the top-selling title. The three rivals ended up merging to become IPC.
